Saree shopping in Mumbai…

I had the pleasure to meet DR. R. Padmavathi, principal of Success Vocational Junior College in Hyderabad and speak with her students, most of whom are young women from surrounding villages studying medical sciences.

Many of these young women were not encouraged to get an education but have determined to push forward in order to better provide for their families and to be an example of strength to their children.  Some, having married by the age of 13 or 14 are now in their early twenties and juggling full time studies with raising two or three children.  I was taken by their bravery and grace…

I shared a bit about my business and family and then each of the students told me about themselves.  The hour that had been allocated quickly turned to four as they opened up and told me stories of hardship, poverty, fear, and now hope for the future.

The following day, with the coordination assistance of my friend Satish, the students ran a health camp at the nearby village of Imamguda, population 750.  Residents were alerted that if they attended the clinic, set up in the local elementary school, they would receive free blood-typing and basic tests, along with a routine exam.  There would also be some free medications distributed as required.

(Being interviewed for TV9 India to explain the Health Camp concept and discuss the importance of promoting good health among those who can least afford health care services.)

(The students were served a hot meal prepared by villagers as a thank you for their service and dedication.)

Most of the patients were treated for minor illnesses but as the clinic was nearing closing time, a family approached us as we sat nearby in the shade.  The wife explained that her husband had oral cancer and had his tongue removed and despite treatment at a major hospital, was not getting better.  She passed me her husband’s medical file and although the file stated that 4 rounds of chemotherapy had been administered and charged to the government under a plan for impoverished residents, there was no evidence that he had actually received the treatment.  After a few more questions it came to our understanding that the expensive treatment was most likely replaced with glucose intravenous and this man was now gravely ill.

As Dr. Padmavathi explained this to the family, all eyes filled with tears.  I wondered what level greed could allow a medical professional charged with the care and treatment of this struggling family’s patriarch to pocket funds and leave him to die.  His wife, who spoke not a word of English, locked eyes with me and pleaded for me to do something to help them.  I was utterly helpless.  As Satish translated, I said “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”  And we both cried.

It was another day of the extremes of emotion in India.  Happiness for the residents, who were so thankful; sadness for a family destroyed by the greed of someone they trusted to heal and protect; pride for the students who gave of their time and skills to help others.  Again, I am filled with gratitude.

Namaste,

Lisa

Turbine India Project - Update Two.

I left Halifax on the evening of Tuesday, April 17th and arrived at Hyderabad, India at 4:45am, the morning of Thursday, April 19th.

After navigating airports and security checks, I had finally made my destination and was greeted by Satish Sikha of Healthy Kids Happy Kids Foundation and his volunteer, Zishan Ali.  We traveled to Satish’s family home where I had a brief rest, washed my face and changed my clothes, and joined his team of volunteers on what was to be one of the most emotional, eye-opening, and inspiring days of my life.

We ventured off to the first of several slum areas on the outskirts of Hyderabad to deliver home-cooked meals to the families there.  At our first stop a group of young children came running to our car and wrapped their arms around us as we struggled to climb out onto the hot sand.  One of the assistants captured a photo of me with the overjoyed children and moments later Satish leaned over and said, “these ones have lost their parents.”

My initial laughter and excitement was swiftly replaced by overwhelming sadness, and then by the recognition of my need to show others as much gratitude and love as these children had shown me.  Words can’t describe this experience so I’ll tell this story with pictures…

Namaste,

Lisa

We had a wonderful evening taking in VIP parties where we enjoyed some interesting encounters with various celebrities and media.

The evening started with dinner at the Carlton.  Several celebrities passed our table as we ate; we had a brief encounter with Ryan Gosling - let me say he even looks incredible unshaven and in a simple sleeveless t-shirt!

We then moved on to the VIP Party for the new movie “Politics of Love” at The Terrasse” on the rooftop of the J.W. Marriot on La Croisette. One of the stars of the film present at the exclusive party, Mallika Sherawat, had previously visited us at the DPA Gifting Lounge where we gifted her and her entourage three ‘Mini Sam Satchels’ and an ‘Upside Down Dress’; she was a huge fan of the satchels! Also at the party was Carly Steel of “TV Guide”, whom we gifted a ‘Mini Hobo’ bag after she interviewed Linda Cardellini (TV Show ‘E.R.’) and Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and the Furious, Avatar) at our gift suite.  The party ended with the release of thousands of red, white, and blue balloons!

Later in the evening we went to another exclusive VIP party at ‘Martini Beach’ - the paparazzi were present, photographing several celebrities and we watched amazing fireworks over the ocean.

Eventually we made our way to the most exclusive club in the French Riviera, ‘The VIP Room’. I was dancing on the rotating dance floor when to my left I noticed a small figure stand up on a stage with a microphone and start singing a familiar song - it was Kat DeLuna. Her presence rocked the club and the party went all night; later I found out that this club hosts many huge performers.  The Black Eyed Peas performed the night before - what an amazing venue.

Lisa Drader-Murphy and Gwen Stefani Attend VIP Film Opening in Cannes
The exclusive VIP opening for the Chinese movie ‘Snow Flower and the Secret Fan’ was held earlier this week at the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel - in attendance were Rob Lowe, Gwen Stefani, and many talented European and Asian actors. Lisa Drader-Murphy had the amazing opportunity to have a conversation with Gwen and pose for a few photos before the Red Carpet began at the Palais des Festivals; afterwards noting how gracious and approachable the famed singer is.
